Twice a year Jersey Heritage keeps Elizabeth Castle open long after the last ferry would normally leave, and the causeway walk out across the sand at dusk is worth the ticket on its own.
Inside there are torch-lit tours of the barracks and hermitage, costumed guides telling the castle's Civil War story, and a courtyard bar pouring island cider while a brass band plays. The evening finishes with a cannon salute across St Aubin's Bay.
Check the tide tables printed on your ticket: the causeway floods, and the amphibious ferry is the only way back once it does.
