Built on a tidal islet in St Aubin's Bay, Elizabeth Castle has guarded Jersey since the 1590s. Sir Walter Raleigh named it, Charles II sheltered in it, and the German occupying forces fortified it again in the 1940s.
At low tide you can walk the mile-long causeway; when the water returns, the amphibious ferry does the honours.
